Welcome to the website for the “Construction Leadership Skills Development” project.

This project is managed by the Construction Leadership Centre, School of Engineering and the Built Environment (SEBE), University of Wolverhampton, UK.

Project Overview

The project is funded by the Higher Education to Business (HE2B) ‘Innovation Grant’.

The aim of this project is ‘to facilitate the development of leadership skills for construction professionals’. It is envisaged that the proposed project will address an urgent need for a better understanding of the gap of leadership skills and subsequently delivering bespoke training programmes for the UK construction industry.

This project aims to achieve the following objectives:

To undertake and publish a critical analysis of the existing gap of leadership development training programmes in the UK.

  • To complete a benchmarking exercise that compares practices of construction leadership against those in other sectors.
  • To develop a demand-led training framework for the leaders of the UK construction industry.
  • To organise a series of training events for leadership capacity building tailored to the needs of the SMEs.

Business Benefits

The project findings will be used to form the foundation of the Construction Leadership Centre (CLC), that aims to provide tailor-made and collaborative development programmes for industry executives.  The CLC will be the only industry specific leadership centre in the UK and will deliver valuable support and opportunities for those construction sector organisations wishing to strengthen their performance and develop a competitive advantage over their competitors.

The results of this study will benefit construction organisations through improved awareness and understanding of:

  • The importance of leadership
  • Key characteristics of a leader
  • Most influential leader within the UK construction industry
  • The key leadership skills development programmes available
  • Topics to be covered in the leadership skills development training programmes
  • The key challenges facing organisations in deploying leadership skills development programmes
